The Challenge

Ashleigh Farms is a state of the art piggery run by the McGrath family in Ballinameela, Co Waterford.  It is among the top performing pig farms in Europe and at the forefront of development. The farm has grown to a capacity of over 13,000 pigs, and a major expansion was required to increase capacity and to install a sustainable waste management system.

A unique walling system was to be installed to divide the pens in which the pigs are housed. The Combi Board Zeta walling system is an extremely hygienic walling system that is resistant to mould and aggressive substances. The void in the middle of this walling system must be filled with concrete to improve stability and resistance to fire. With an opening of only 100mm and with wall heights in excess of 3m a conventional concrete would not prove suitable.

The Solution

Roadstone suggested the use of specially designed Self Compacting Concrete as being the ideal solution for the project. This negated the need for the concrete to be vibrated. Benefits of which included:

Ensuring that the Combi Board Zeta walling did not become damaged

Allowed for savings in plant requirements

Reduced labour costs

The Result

As well as meeting the customers’ specific requirements, Self Compacting Concrete also:

Achieved structural and durability requirements

Ensured reduced noise levels in an area in close proximity to existing farm buildings housing pigs

Eliminated some health and safety hazards such as white finger

Takeaways

Roadstone’s Self Compacting Concrete proved to be an ideal solution for the Combi Board Zeta walling system and the application required.
