Lower CO2 Road Solutions Trial - N52 Meath

The challenge associated with this road pavement trial was to demonstrate that by using the levers available to us today, we can successfully manufacture, transport & install asphalt mixtures that meet specified performance requirements whilst achieving significant reductions in embodied CO2.

N52 Meath Road Solutions Trial
The Solution

To address this challenge, the project team developed innovative low CO2 asphalt materials, for base and binder courses, using the latest technologies available including: 70% reclaimed asphalt, warm mix technology and bio binders. HVO was used in all plant & machinery to further reduce the CO2 impact during production, supply & laying. The compaction rollers used the latest intelligent compaction technology saving time & cost while also reducing carbon emissions. These innovations help to reduce our CO2 emissions without compromising our laying practices. Close collaboration between key stakeholders, including material suppliers, contractors, and testing teams, ensured the successful implementation of the solution. Performance testing was conducted to validate the mixture's ability to meet specified requirements for durability and functionality under high traffic conditions.

The Result

The trial demonstrated that it is possible to produce and install low CO2 road solutions without compromising performance. The collaborative approach adopted among the key stakeholders has set a benchmark for future sustainable road construction projects. This trial showcased how leveraging existing technologies and innovative materials, we can deliver practical solutions to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high performance in road pavement applications.

Next Steps

To continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, through innovations in sustainable materials and practices. Further collaboration with key stakeholders to challenge the legislative & regulatory headwinds faced in developing asphalt mixes with Ultra High RAP contents and increasing the use of bio-binders, is crucial in the pursuit of lower carbon road solutions.
