The Challenge

To provide an urban garden area of the highest design quality which is accessible while being fun and functional. The products would have to be:

Functional to accommodate the special needs of the customer.

Resilient and suitable for Irish conditions.

The vision specified by Peter Donegan (Landscape Architect).

Available to suit the tight project timeline.

The Solution

60m² of Thomond Paving 60mm in 2 sizes was laid as a car-parking area in the front of the house. This paving was supplied in a Vermont colour. The Thomond Paving provided a durable paving product that can accommodate light traffic and turning areas and requires minimum maintenance or protecting from the elements.

The Thomond Paving was restrained using 25m of Castlestone Kerb in a charcoal colour. The Castlestone Kerb is a 240x120x160 kerb unit that can be used in a variety of different laying directions with the short length of the kerb block also making it ideal for curved work. This kerb also allowed for a raised flowerbed adjacent to the car-parking area. Castlestone Kerb is a flexible kerb unit, it can also be used for planted areas, steps and border details.

Roadstone also supplied 30m² of Settstone Paving, in a silver granite colour, for the rear garden. Settstone paving slabs come in a unique size of 300 x 300 x 60mm and has a high-end granite finish. Settstone does not require a mortar or a sand/cement bed and can be laid directly on to the paving grit sand bed and whacked into place by a plate compactor.

All the paving was laid on 50mm of Roadstone Paving Grit which was screeded over 200mm of fully compacted Clause 804 Stone. Both of these products were supplied from Roadstone. Also supplied was Kiln Dried Silver Granite Jointing Sand for the paving and all these products were sent from Roadstone’s paving plant in Gooig (Limerick).

3m² of Natural Limestone slabs in 3 sizes (300 x 300 x 30mm, 600 x 600 x 30mm and 600 x 300 x 30mm) were laid in a random basis as a feature at the front door. The slabs were laid on a 40mm mortar bed. The slabs were jointed using a Jointit product in the dark colour (Basalt) which was suitable for the random size wide joints.

The Result

This was a very special project with unique requirements.

The paved areas were designed with the special needs of the family in mind, while colours were chosen to compliment the overall design.

Both the paved driveway and rear garden were completed to the highest standard and met the designers brief of being fun, accessible and resilient.

Takeaways

Roadstone Technical staff should always be engaged with before beginning large projects. This gives the client the full benefit of the project experience of Roadstone staff.

A Roadstone Retail Outlet should be visited before commencement in order that customer can see and take-home samples of the paving or walling options.
