There was not a dry eye in the house as viewers tuned into the recent broadcast of RTE’s Room to Improve.

In a special episode, Julian Benson teamed up with architect and host Dermot Bannon to renovate a three-story Georgian house in the heart of Rathgar.
Over 130 Irish companies, including Roadstone, generously donated their time, supplies, and workforce to help transform the 162-year-old home into the haven Julian had dreamed it to be. The collaborative effort showcased the incredible support and community spirit that brought this project to life.

If you watched the episode, you would have seen a number of Roadstone products featured prominently. From our floor screed solutions to our paving, decorative stone, and garden walling, along with various building materials used in the extension to the rear of the home, our contributions played a significant role in the renovation.

As this was a period home and in a residential area, there were a number of challenges faced, which through collaborations with the design team and Roadstone, solutions were found. In the basement, a concrete substructure was needed and our Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) was used. SCC is a highly fluid and flowable non-segregating concrete that requires no mechanical vibration. This means no heavy power tools were needed. On top of this, our Flow Plus liquid floor screed was used, adding insulation and giving a smooth finish to the basement floor.

The upstairs renovation presented another challenge with the timber joists needing careful consideration. A lightweight, waterproof solution was essential for incorporating underfloor heating. We addressed this by using our Wedi Board, a base element designed for hot water heating system pipes like underfloor heating. This provided both excellent thermal insulation and waterproofing. The underfloor heating pipes were fitted into the molds on the board, and our floor screed was then bonded over it.

When designing the outdoor spaces, the design had to not only flow with the overall aesthetic of the home but also be functional and considerate of the occupants who will be using the home. It needed to be a space where residents could come to relax and feel calm. In the back garden, our new range of Evolution Porcelain was used to create a sleek walkway from the basement doors to an open patio area. The porcelain was chosen for its smooth, non-slip properties. The dark tones of the pavement were offset by our rustic Burren Walling, which was built up as a flowerbed wall. The use of our Autumn Gold decorative stone as a border between the walling and paving gave a nice contrast and complemented it perfectly.

Our Urbana Paving is used at the front of the home, leading from the gate into the impressive and stunning Georgian house. Urbana is a hard-wearing paving product, perfect for a heavy-use driveway or path.

It has been a pleasure to work with all the teams in helping to bring Tranquillity House to life. We hope the families who will be using the space find comfort and can call this home away from home as they navigate their treatment journey with CF.
